Job Description

One of the fastest growing online news publishers in South Africa, with over eight million unique users per month, is looking for enthusiastic lifestyle and entertainment writers to produce content for The South African at a flat, per-page view-paid weekly rate.

Our success is directly attributed to our people and the quality of our team. Finding people who we can trust to deliver to our high standards is something we strive for.

We are currently looking for soccer writers for our growing publication on a freelance basis. You will be required to publish a minimum of three articles per week and work most weekends.

Job description/key outputs:

  • Quickly identify, produce, and publish soccer stories
  • Cover major soccer events where necessary and possible
  • Be comfortable reporting on most major SA sports (soccer, cricket, rugby, golf, athletics, etc)
  • Work closely with manager to develop story ideas
  • Produce five to six sports stories per day, or more when necessary
  • Generate story ideas
  • Help aggregate stories to give it a fresh feel and read
  • Be proficient on major social media platforms
  • Be able to live blog and live tweet sports events when required

Requirements:

  • A degree or similar qualification in journalism and/or communications
  • Online publishing experience, with a reputable publisher
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Able to work independently and be an excellent communicator
  • Hard worker is essential
  • Must have a clear grasp of the South African context, cultural nuances, and the unforgiving sports agenda
  • Proficient in content management systems, analytics tools an advantage
  • Knowledge of WordPress an advantage

Training:

Training and mentoring is a key focus area for The South African, and all new content producers will be required to participate in our induction process, which will cover topics such as SEO, WordPress, Google Analytics etc. Training is provided where necessary.
