“There was a lot of flirting over faxing.”

Matthew Perry has the best friends in the world! , he convinced Julia Roberts to appear on Friends with a little help from the writers on the sitcom.

“Matthew asked her to be on the show,” Kevin Bright, the series’ co-creator, told The Hollywood Reporter. “She wrote back to him, ‘Write me a paper on quantum physics and I’ll do it.’”

“My understanding is that Matthew went away and wrote a paper and faxed it to her the next day,” he continued.

Alexa Junge, a former Friends writer, said the pair got very flirty while faxing each other so Perry sought some help from some of the writers on the show.

“She was giving him these questionnaires like, ‘Why should I go out with you?’ And everyone in the writer’s room helped him explain to her why,” she said.

“He could do pretty well without us, but there was no question we were on Team Matthew and trying to make it happen for him,” Junge added. “There was a lot of flirting over faxing.”

Perry succeeded in wooing Roberts with his witty humor and charm. She ended up appearing on a 1996 episode called “The One After the Super Bowl,” and sparks were definitely flying when she acted alongside the actor.

“I don’t know if she fell in love with Matthew on the spot but they soon started dating,” Jeff Astrof, another former Friends writer recalled. “I felt like Cyrano [de Bergerac].”

“Like, Chandler is going to date Julia Roberts and I’m going to go home to my horrible girlfriend,” he jokingly continued. “That’s my memory of that episode.”

The pair kept their relationship very private and they dated from 1995 to 1996. But, thankfully, we’ll always have their Friends episode.
